Never Lost is the novel that I have lived my entire life to write. It is a book about connections, friendship, and unlikely events in our lives that shape them irrevocably. The book is mostly set in Morocco, in the southern coastal village of Sidi Ifni. It tracks the lives of two protagonists, Montana Jones and Brian Walker, as their interactions shape each other’s lives in surprising ways. Montana is a late-career American journalist whose familial and professional identities have imploded. She meets Brian, an ex-pat Brit who was born in the darkest moments of World War II England, at the Sunday souk in a remote fishing village about halfway between Tangiers and the Mauritanian border. As they trade stories of their lives while strolling the Matisse-bleached shores of North Africa, their past and present lives collide. To be published by Mission Point Press in March 2027.
Synopsis
Montana Brown, an American journalist reeling from a collapsed career, a failed marriage, and years of estrangement from her children, escapes to a small town in southern Morocco. Raised in 1970s Berkeley with a French mother and a Dakota father, she arrives in Sidi Ifni, “on the way to nowhere else,” in search of her next chapter. She doesn’t expect to look for someone else’s answers before she’s found her own.
That someone is Brian Walker, a British expat who settled in Sidi Ifni after a lifetime of dubious adventures. Brian left Liverpool for Québec’s Great Whale River in 1964 and learned, in a snowstorm, that “a person is never lost. The place they’re looking for is what’s lost.” His picaresque wanderings led him to Morocco, where he married a local woman with a charmingly parasitic extended family — and believed he’d left his past behind.
At the Sidi Ifni Sunday souk, Brian and Montana build an unlikely friendship from shards of their lives that neither of them has ever shared. When Montana’s sleuthing into Brian’s secrets draws two travelers to Sidi Ifni in search of the man who may be their father, Brian discovers that his past cannot be outrun. He responds in kind, contriving to hand Montana pieces of her own life she’s spent years avoiding.
What follows isn’t a reunion so much as a reckoning: Both discover that beyond blood or birthplace, family is often forged by how well we learn to love – and be loved.
