Newsweek: We’re Having a Baby

« back

Over the course of my Newsweek career, I covered many stories about the ongoing fight to create legal protections for gays and lesbians.  Slowly but perceptibly, we also chronicled American society’s growing acceptance of homosexuality.  I interviewed Air Force pilots who revealed their sexual preference and were discharged, years before President Obama finally rescinded the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that now allows homosexuals to serve openly, if warily, in the military.  In this cover story, prompted by singer Melissa Etheridge agreeing to be on the cover (I think), we explored the evolution of a country that once whispered about “women who wore sensible shoes” to one that shrugged when the lesbian daughter of the most notoriously conservative vice-president in U.S. history came out.
