Newsweek: Farewell, Diana

« back

I was in a 14-century French village doing a freelance story when I received an email from a colleague of mine:  “Get your ass to Paris!!!”  Lady Diana had just died in a car crash, and I called Newsweek’s Paris bureau chief to see if I could help out.  He and the London bureau chief decided I should go to St. Tropez, to recreate the final weeks of Di and Dodi, her lover.  I discovered that Di would take William and Harry to a cheesy little carnival just outside of town, and ride bumper cars with the young princes.  None of the carnival workers had ever told the press about the royal family’s plebian exploits.
